The heatwave temperatures of late June continued for the Harris Handicap, now in its third year. Fourteen players turned out in sartorial style with outfits inventively customised in croquet colours, and contested four rounds of short croquet on lawns that challenged with variable speeds. Following the example of the World Cup hydration breaks were built in after each round and gave the players some necessary respite from the heat. By lunchtime, after two rounds, Sue L and Chris A were leaders of the pack with two wins apiece.
Conversation flowed over an excellent Bring&Share lunch - the usual range of savoury and sweet delights was enjoyed by all. Siestas were called for but time was pressing for the afternoon’s play.
Round 3 pitted winners against winners - leaders Sue and Chris played each other in a close-fought game, while another eight players on one win each were matched and paired on closest equivalent number of hoops scored. The heat was on, literally and metaphorically.
A cream tea and cake break allowed the players to regroup for the final round, with Sue in the lead on three wins from three games. Chris, James M, Fiona, Cathie and defending champion Helen G remained in contention with two wins apiece. All still to play for!
Arithmetic was required after round 4, with Fiona, Chris, James and Sue all now on three wins. Total number of hoops scored settled who was winner and the trophy was awarded to Chris with 49 hoops, and the RU spot to Fiona on 43 hoops. Congratulations both! Prizes of York’s favourite Chocolate Orange were also awarded for the fastest game - this distinction went to Simon for a 32 minute victory in R2 - and for the best outfit on the day, awarded to Tim for his creative emphasis on primary ball colours and mallet-enhanced hat.
Thanks to everyone who played on a very hot day and helped with setting up and clearing away both inside and out. All-in-all another enjoyable, fun and sociable club day.
