We play Association Croquet at York Croquet Club. It's a strategic game where the aim is to score more hoops than your opponent. The lawns are of similar size to bowling greens. English weather being what it is, we meet rain or shine.
Croquet does not rely on strength; it is a game of strategy and skill. As in Snooker, players get extra turns for successful shots; building a string of shots together forms a break. The handicapping system means any player can find enjoyment and challenge in playing against any other, beginner or seasoned player. At club sessions players are drawn at random on the day, and everyone gets a game. Of course, members can arrange matches with each other at any time at no extra charge.
Association Croquet can be enjoyed in various formats – singles or doubles, short lawn or full lawn, timed or untimed – and we play all these variants.
The main focus of the club is participation and enjoyment. However, for those who enjoy a competitive game, we run internal leagues and competitions and take part in external leagues and tournaments.
All members are welcome to attend any or all club sessions. Club sessions are as follows:
Monday 10:00 am to 12:00 noon
Wednesday 6:00 pm to Dusk
Thursday 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Thursday 6:00 pm to Dusk
Saturday 10:00 am to 12:00 noon
Outside these times, members are free to book a lawn at any time one is available.
There is also a range of social, coaching and other events. An optional ‘WhatsApp’ group helps us to keep in touch with each other. At York Croquet Club we play this absorbing game for pleasure, and are always delighted when people new to croquet are interested in finding out more. We are a friendly club and new members are always welcome.
